From Pit Bulls to NCUA Press Releases: A Week in the Life
Download MP3Hey everyone, this is Mark
Kel with another short
episode of With Flying Colors.
It is June 9th, Monday.
I will be posting this on
June 10th, Tuesday, and.
I wanna talk a little bit.
Oh, here comes one of my little buddies.
I've been dog sitting for five days.
My daughter has two wonderful Staffords
staffies, as you call 'em, also
known as pit bulls, nicest dogs on
the planet, and I've been in charge
of them for the last five days.
I would give myself a for effort.
And a C or a C for execution.
It's kinda like throwing one
interception on the first drive, and
then, it all goes bad from there.
But then you get your c legs under you
and you come back for a narrow victory.
I, I felt that's what happened.
They're both happy and healthy.
And if you are a listener to this,
heard this, and, are on my email
list or on LinkedIn, shoot me a
private message and I'll tell you
why I gave myself a c or a C minus.
The first day was a little rocky, despite
the clear instructions from my daughter.
That's why NCUA has checklists, right?
Follow the checklists, you'll be fine.
That's why regulations say
you gotta do A, B, and C.
Follow the regulations, you'll be fine.
If I had followed the
doggy daycare regulations,
everything would've been fine.
It's still fine.
But anyway, C minus for for execution,
which reminds me of another story
which was John McKay, who was
the coach of the Tampa Bay
Buccaneers back in the seventies.
They were the first team
to go with no victories.
Back then, they only played 14
game seasons, so they were ing 14
after the last game of the season.
They were getting interviewed,
he was getting interviewed on the
sidelines, and the reporter asked Mr.
McKay, formerly of USC, I think if.
What he thought of his
team's execution that day.
He looked at the camera, smiled
and said he, I'm all for it.
So I, I feel a little bit like
that with some of how this went.
So I've built it up
into something immense.
It wasn't that immense.
'cause both dogs are, have
healthy and happy, as am I.
But again, shoot me a note if
you wanna hear the real story.
All right.
So I, I'm moving from.
Doggy daycare to a different location
here shortly, and I wanted to get a short
message out about what NCUA did last week.
They issued a press release, and I'm
gonna try and share my screen here.
Okay.
For, by the way, this is
podcast and also on YouTube,
and I'm going to share.
Here we go.
Okay, so you are now seeing
me up in the corner and you're
seeing the lovely nnc.gov
news press releases, dash releases.
Okay.
This came out from nnc a last week,
and it said next board meeting
tentatively scheduled for July 24th.
Hey, Leo, that's my boy.
The next so on June 6th, they announced
the next meeting of the board of the NCUA.
National Credit Union Administration
is tentatively scheduled for July
24th, 2025 at 10 p 10:00 AM Eastern.
The NCOA has updated
the website accordingly.
Projected meeting dates listed
online are placeholders put on the
calendar at the end of the prior year.
As a result, dates of the NCA
Board meeting should be considered
tentative until the issuance
of a formal meeting noticed.
All future meetings, agendas and schedules
are subject to change at any time.
All meetings of the NCA Board are
held at its headquarters, 1775 Duke
Street in Alexandria, Virginia.
Visitors are encouraged to
blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
You don't really need to register.
I did that once and it was
like nobody even cared.
It wasn't because they knew who I
was, although they did know who I was.
All right.
They also have it on YouTube,
which is why I stopped going.
I can just watch it on YouTube.
Not that I'm in town all the
time, but YouTube's awesome.
All right.
They, this is another way of saying
we've got nothing to tell you.
In June, they previously had canceled
a meeting when they were going to tell
a, tell their tail on their reorg.
And Houghman eloquently stated at the
beginning of the last meeting that,
Hey, we didn't have the final numbers,
so we thought we'd push it back.
That may or may not have been the reality,
but it was, a good narrative nonetheless.
I had a previous podcast where I
predicted the future of what would
happen in 2025 for NCUA and their board
schedule, and I predicted they would be
canceling meetings left and right, which
is a trend started under Todd Harper.
By the way, current leadership
and staff at NCUA have encouraged
them to go to quarterly meetings.
They didn't, the first board that
was offered, that didn't bite.
One of the reasons is the only real
audience the board gets on a national
level is at the board meetings.
That's where they can show the influence.
That's where they can have
influence, public influence.
They can do things behind the
scenes, but it's really a good show.
I.
For these political types to show how
their politics have helped the industry.
So to go away from monthly, they,
again, as a reminder, they meet
11, generally meet 11 times a year.
They skip August.
They started skipping some last year,
which set the tone for this year.
Now they're skipping more.
And by the way, July is
only tentatively scheduled.
You could you could make an
argument that hey, you could at
least do one briefing, right?
Do a cyber briefing.
Do, do a, here's the
state of merit briefing.
Do a, here's a update on the budget,
which is probably what they'll do in July.
'cause they used to do
budget actual votes in July.
And then when I was at the agency, we
pivoted more to tweaking and briefing
on the budget unless there was something
material that needed to be done.
So I'm expecting July will
have a budget briefing.
They won't have anything in August.
I'm.
Suspecting as they get near the end of
the year and they're trying to figure out
the budget, they might cancel September.
And as I've said elsewhere
in previous podcasts, they
don't need a budget this year.
They have a two year budget, and I don't
think they believe that they can really
approve one with one board member,
despite what they've said publicly.
So if it were me, if I was in
charge of NCUA, I would have a
briefing every month to show.
To show relevance, to show we're
listening, to show we're here
canceling the meetings, I just
think sends the wrong tone.
But, that's okay if that's
where they wanna go.
In the staff, in the defensive
staff and a defense of the
chair, they got a lot going on.
They gotta figure out
the new normal, right?
So a dog and pony show, which is what
briefings are generally maybe they're
saying they don't have the time for
that, but by not having the briefing.
By not having a board meeting, you show
that you got other things you gotta
do and or you've got nothing to do.
Which is it?
I would I don't wanna say concoct,
but I would come up with a strategy
of having a briefing every month.
If I couldn't vote on something.
And that's it.
That's my take on that.
I've got some other exciting
things to announce that I'll
touch on in a short podcast.
That will be coming out next week.
All right.
That's it.
That's a wrap.
Appreciate you listening.
As always, I hope you
will listen again soon.
Mark Trifle signing
off with flying colors.
